The three most important things that differentiates distributions from one another is either package management, community, or philosophy. I don't generally cover derived distributions such as Artix or Linux Mint. I'm not sorry about it.
Daily Drivable direct link to this section
- qubesOS can use Whonix as a disposable qube alongside Fedora or Debian as default templates
- void linux no systemd, uses runit, options for musl over glibc, good package management with XBPS, need I say more?
- Arch Linux really popular among FOSS enthusiast but I don't understand because Void Linux can do anything Arch does in a better way. AUR is a mess. Systemd increases attack surface and isn't essential unless you're a sysadmin. There are multiple forks that include a newbie friendly installer, but you might as well try Arch for yourself.
Servers direct link to this section
- Alpine Linux known to be fast and minimal
- Debian known for it's stability
- Ubuntu it's grown in popularity for server infrastructure and amassed a large following, you can almost ensure that there is hardware compatibility and proprietary drivers for anything related to Ubuntu. I would avoid Gnome and KDE. Canonical is one of the main critiques against Ubuntu, if you want Ubuntu for sysadmin reasons you're probably better off with Debian.
- CentOS (depreciated)
- An offshoot of Red-Hat Linux
- Selinux is integrated into the distribution
- discontinued

These distributions fall under this category for good reason, they have special use cases and are not safe or ideal to use as a daily operating system.
- Tails All traffic is routed through TOR.
- Kali Linux, Black Arch, Parrot, or other distributions with pre-installed penetration testing tools
